Recycling Furnace Ecomelt PS-250 at Hulamin shows good results
After an installation time of only 6 months, Hulamin Ltd., South Africa, successfully commissioned a Hertwich Ecomelt PS250 recycling furnace with an initial capacity of 50.000 tons per year in record-breaking time.
Today, Hulamin Ltd., located in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, is the most important producer of aluminium semis in South Africa. As local can makers and fillers are more and more converting their lines to use Aluminium can stock and Hulamin will recycle the Used Beverage Cans (UBC’s) back into salable goods, recycling capacities had to be expanded.
The system developed by Hertwich, namely the Ecomelt-PS melting furnace, combines the separate operations of decoating and melting into a single, continuous working process in which the energy content of the pyrolysis gases is used for heating the furnace. The furnace installed in Pietermaritzburg mets all criteria concerning melting performance, energy consumption, melt loss and emissions:
- The material mix provided, consisting of contaminated scrap can material (up to 65%) and thin-walled production scrap can be processed without problems.
- The specific energy consumption has been reduced by almost 50 %
- Ultimately, the same applies to the net melt loss values. Results up to now prove that values lower than 3 percent are achieved.
- Minimal emissions (NOx, dioxins, VOC, no salts) and the lower fuel consumption, which results in lower CO2 emissions, contribute to environmentally friendly furnace operation.
